SETTLER FAMILIES:

WILLIAM WALTER AND ELIZABETH R. (COWHERD) SMITH

William W. Smith (b. Mar 19, 1815 in Kentucky, USA) and Elizabeth R.Cowherd (b. Sept. 23, 1820 in Indiana, USA) were married in Orange Cty Indiana Mar 11, 1841.  According to the obituary of their son N.M. the family, including eight children emigrated to Osage Township KS in 1868 and settled about 1 mile east of Jacksonville.  Both husband and wife, and at least five of their children, are buried in McCune Cemetery.  The children:

Sara Jane (b. Dec. 1, 1841) – married F.M. Nelson Feb 22, 1873.  They had 4 children.  She died Sept. 13, 1920 and is buried in McCune Cemetery along with her husband.

Caroline (b. 1845) – married James L. Rawlins Mar 7, 1869. They had a daughter named Jennie.  She died Jan. 21, 1920 and is buried in McCune Cemetery along with her husband.

Benjamin F. (b. Aug 30, 1848) married Ella Wilson Dec. 11, 1887

James D. (b. 1851) married Dora Purkiser

Mary (b. 1854)

Nathan Marian (b. Mar 20, 1856) married Cora Belle Wilson Oct. 29, 1884) They had a son named Herman Wilson and a daughter named Margaret Elizabeth. He died May 19, 1930 and is buried, with his wife and two children, in McCune Cemetery.

Lucy A. (b. July 12, 1858) married Homer Amend.  They had two children Nina Belle and Gerald H. She died April 1934 and is buried, along with her husband, in the McCune Cemetery.

William W. (b. Jan 7, 1862) married Rosella Mansfield Nov. 5, 1891.  They had 5 children.  He died April 18, 1943 in Turlock, Cal.
